The History

The History of the Goodness...

We all dream about catching more fish and bigger fish, it’s that progression that makes our sport so addictive, it’s that desire to catch your first 20 or 30, but it never ends there, we want a 40 and then a 50. Twenty 20’s in a season etc. The reality is that there are many things we can put in place to make these dreams come true!

Being successful at Carp fishing is like most things in life and is about working smarter not harder. That fundamentally means making the most of your time on the bank however plentiful or limited that may be.

Progressing your results as an angler is about aligning all the elements that form success:

Watercraft:  Our personal experiences as an angler, recording whether it be by memory on notepad the time we spend by the lake, the things we see, the lessons we learn and the knowledge we harvest through our efforts. We learn through both the good and bad, the successes and failures and it’s the association we make from these experiences that allow us to form pictures and solutions to the challenges that we may face in the future, whether it be a later angling session on the same water or the knowledge we carry on to the next waters we fish.

Fishing Friends: As much as we all hate to admit it the bulk of what we learn particularly in those early days comes from those who fish around us. Being open to learn and sharing our knowledge means that we can work together and learn so much more than if we isolate ourselves.

Technique: Comes from the practice and desire to improve and skills and abilities, whether it to be to cast further, more accurately and consistently or to bait up more precisely.

Bait: I Believe this is the most important element and is indeed the reason I have left it till last and also because its going to need some explaining, basically if you don’t get the bait right it does not matter how good we get at all the other stuff you will never maximise our angling potential and in short will not live those angling dreams.

Be truthful and tell me how much effort goes into making sure you are using the most effective bait you can get your hands on?

About 20 years ago I started Carp angling and putting lots of time and effort into weekend sessions and holidays. The results started out slow and gradually things started to click into place. After a season the thing that played on my mind most was how good is my bait? At the time I was juggling two baits: a home made carbohydrate/Protein based scopex bait and one of SBS’s fish meals. I didn’t know why I was using them except I knew they would catch me a reasonable share of fish because they worked for others! I knew if I worked on all the other stuff and put things into place I would do alright. I caught a fair few fish Great! but there was one thing that kept nagging away in my mind and would not let me settle. I like to have answers and reasons and I knew I could not settle on any bait unless I could start to understand what made one bait work and another not? The thing that really got the mind going was why certain fish where not eating the bait at all and some not as confidently as others?

I was about to embark on a two year mission that was to uncover a whole lot of truths and myths about bait. The real learning started in 1989 after learning a fair bit about carp and what makes them tick I started to establish some amazingly obvious facts. When it comes to what a carp likes to eat its boils down to what is available in the natural environment as the season changes and the lifecycle of the natural food sources adjust… basically their bodies are geared to adapt to their environment. Warmer water = more food available = increased metabolism = more feeding  and the reverse as water temperature drops.

Carp like most living creatures have the ability to absorb the things they need from what they eat and convert those things that are in excess to those things that are lacking in the body, the downside to the carp carrying out this conversion is that a whole lot of unnecessary energy gets used up in the process.

This got me thinking "What if I was to make that whole process easier for the carp by giving them all the goodness they need in their diet in the form of an easy to digestible bait?", not only would it be really good for them but if it made them feel good there would be a pretty good chance they would be up for some more and be on the look out for it.

Ok so I needed a bait that had all that goodness in it and to my amazement I could not see one already being marketed! It seemed such a simple conclusion, but despite all the Carbohydrates, fish meals, bird foods, Proteins, Liver bases etc I could not see a single one that was a true balance of Protiens/Carbs/Vitamins/Minerals/Oils and the amino chains that support the breakdown of protein chains and absorption of nutrients.

That is why 17 years ago I produced my own truly nutritionally balanced bait and through trial and error have produced the most effective bait I have ever witnessed.

I have called this bait ‘the goodness’ because it provides a balance of all the things that carp require in their diet. It is easy to digest and the added amino chains and vitamins are easily absorbed and also support the break down of protein chains in the bait so all in all fish get both an immediate and long term benefit from eating it. Most importantly its powers of attraction are instant and fish find it difficult to refuse once they get a taste for it.

This bait far out performs ALL OTHER BAITS on the fisheries where it is used. A couple of seasons ago I accounted for approx 70% of captures from a tough syndicate lake. Where I caught fifty carp over 20lb including thirteen carp over 30lb and broke the lake record 3 times over a period of 3 months. I also caught some carp that had not been out for over 5 years! There where 18 other captures from the lake during the same time with 10-12 anglers regularly fishing the lake during the same period and none of these 18 captures where fish over 30lb!
